Taking on Diabetes and Tying Down Loose Ends

Jeri Ash joined DWA in 2001 as a project coordinator, tying up the loose ends that can often trip up a project. She liked the teamwork here, and the fact that everyone worked together for a single cause—the successful fulfillment of our clients’ needs.

Jeri had another cause as well. Her sister has type 1 diabetes, and Jeri was an active volunteer for the local chapter of the American Diabetes Association (ADA). She knew that diabetes is frequently misunderstood, particularly the twofold nature of the disease. She wanted folks to understand that diabetes means more to the patient than daily shots of insulin. Although patients with type 1 diabetes face a different struggle from those with type 2, all are united in the need for more research and public education. So she turned to the team at DWA and asked them to work together for second cause, taking the initiative to lead DWA in its support of the ADA.

Since 2001, DWA has been a leading local fundraiser for the ADA during the Annual Step-Out Walk and Kiss A Pig Campaign and promotes disease awareness throughout the company. Jeri enjoys creating new fundraising tactics within the company, such as the first annual “Paws for a Cause” in which employees were encouraged to bring their pets to the office for a Pet Parade and family photographs with their furry friends.

DWA encourages initiative, and Jeri’s initiative has been shown throughout her career here. She’s been driven by her passion to stay at least one step ahead of the pack—even if that meant backtracking a bit to survey the scene. Jeri left the company briefly and returned in September 2009 to become Manager of Logistics Services. She says it was “like coming home.”

Jeri’s prior service here as Project Coordinator and later Project Manager have given her unique insight into the challenges facing staff as they manage the details of complex communications projects. “Some things you just can’t teach unless you’ve experienced it,” she says. “I can help employees understand the challenges of the job and work with them to increase their job satisfaction and their enjoyment of just coming in to work each day.”

How does Jeri describe her time at DWA? In a word—“Wow!”
