When Denyse Palmer started college at Indiana University, she majored in biochemistry with the goal of becoming a doctor. She loved science and was good at it. But first-semester calculus had other ideas for her.
“Medicine was my plan, but it was not THE PLAN. Whatever THE plan is, I’m ready for it.”
So after graduation, she worked for a design firm in Florida, and then for a motion picture ad agency. Returning to Indianapolis, she worked in online mortgage education, developing and maintaining the company’s online training. And then, a new plan came together.
She was notified by a career site that a job was available at DWA; she applied; and after a whirlwind courtship, she joined DWA a week later as a senior production associate in Multimedia and Design Services (MMDS).
“Even though I had planned on becoming a doctor, I had never worked in the medical field before. I feel that this was destined. I want to continue on this path and see where it takes me.”
Denyse’s prior employment and her own initiative made her a perfect fit for the MMDS team. She had experience with lots of different communications and design software.
“I think I came in at a good time because the team needed help and I hope my experiences have helped to keep us on track. We’re a solid team of personalities that flow and mesh well together. Everyone brings something new to the table, and I think we bring out the best in each other.”
For her future, she only wants to get better—to keep learning, and be a constant contributor to the program. “My parents emphasized education and career, and that has been my emphasis as well.”
Denyse’s word for DWA is “family.”
“It goes back to ‘glad I could help.’ At some companies, you’re often left on your own. Here, everyone is proactive. They ask how you are and do you need anything. There’s a support/back-up system and you’re encouraged to ask for help.”
